Illiger's Macaws

Illiger's macaws are sweet, outgoing, and playful, especially if properly socialized. They can be noisy. They can learn to talk, but are rather limited in this ability. While most macaws have a smooth even flight, Illiger's tend to be more like a daredevil pilot. They will drop like a stone and in the space of a breath they will change directions, even close to the ground. They are very sweet, outgoing and playful. They also tend to be sensitive. Their talking ability is limited. They are around 17 inches in length and weigh around 250-350 grams.

Severe macaws

Severe macaws are highly intelligent, playful, and probably the most sensitive of the mini-macaws. They are extremely quick learners. If everyone in the family works with them consistently, they can form bonds with all members of the family. They love to wrestle with their owners, sometimes giving painful but playful nips. This behavior is not meant to be aggressive, but rather it is in play. They can be noisy. They also can learn to talk, but are not famous for this trait. Though they are small, they have huge personalities. They are very affectionate and form strong bonds with their owners. They are around 18-19 inches in length and weigh around 300-450 grams.

The Hahn's Macaw

The Hahn's Macaw or Red-shouldered Macaw is the smallest macaw available in the pet trade. These macaws are relatively common in the pet trade, but their numbers have been dropping in the wild due to habitat loss.
They are endemic to Guianas, Venezuela, Brazil - North of the Amazon. They are not yet considered to be an endangered species, but they are listed in Appendix Two of the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species. This status greatly limits the ability to capture or sell wild birds.
These mini-macaws range from 12 to 14 inches in length (~ 30 - 31 cm) - a little larger than a cockatiel. They average 165 g in weight. These small macaws have excellent speech mimicry.
Like all macaws, the Hahn's macaw has a long narrow tail and a large head. It has bright green feathers on the body, with dark or slate blue feathers on the head just above the beak. The wings and tail have feathers that are bright green above and olive-green below. The leading edges of the wings, especially on the underside, are red. (These red feathers appear at puberty.) Their eyes are orange, and the skin around the eyes is white without feathers, just as in the larger macaws. This bare patch of facial skin is smaller in proportion to the head than the one seen in larger macaws.

Camelot Macaw

A Camelot Macaw is a second generation hybrid cross between a Scarlet & a Catalina Macaw. (A Catalina is a first generation hybrid of a Scarlet x Blue & Gold Macaw). Camelot Macaws come in a diverse array of colors, even though it is often incorrectly assumed that they are all predominantly yellow. This is simply not so, nor is it even close to the truth. The color variation of the Camelot offspring depends largely on the genetics of the parents. Yellow dominant Camelot macaws happen to be the exception, not the rule. There is no authenticated method that I know of at this time to calculate what coloration the offspring will be. Camelot Macaws are often red dominant with green markings on their backs. No matter what their color, most Camelot Macaws also have a green nape. Only about 1 in 5 are born orange or yellow dominant, with considerable variation in shade & color.

Ruby Macaws

The Ruby Macaw is a hybrid produced by crossing a Green Wing Macaw and a Scarlet Macaw. If the male of the pair is a Green Wing, the offspring will generally have the size, in body and head, of the Green Wing. The green band of feathers in the middle of the wings will have varying amounts of orange and yellow, and some of the band feathers will also be edged or lined with shades of yellow and orange. The coloring can vary somewhat from one bird to another even in babies from the same clutch. Feather lines on the face are evident, but they are normally thinner than those of the Green Wing.

Shamrock Macaws

Shamrock Macaws are a very colorful hybrid Macaw. A Shamrock macaw is a cross between a Military and a Scarlet macaw. Otono is a full size Macaw and has learned to speak several phrases including: hello, hello love, goodbye, pretty bird, and "how are ya". A full sized Shamrock macaw, they can get over 2 lbs.

The Buffon's Macaw

The Buffon's Macaw , also called the Great Green Macaw is a Central American parrot found in Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia and Ecuador. Great Green Macaws are green, with a reddish forehead and pale blue lower back, rump and upper tail cover feathers. Tail is brownish red tipped with very pale blue.
