THICK-BILLED PARROTS















These are one of the Macaw Allies, similar to Military Macaw. Thick-billed parrots are about 38cm in length.They are large green parrots with short, wedge-sharped tail and large, strongly compressed black bill, fore crown, broad band above eye, bend of wing and thighs red. They are found in northwestern to central Mexico, along the pine forests of the Sierra Madre Occidental. Thick-bills prefer mature up land primary growth forest and feed on pine nuts, other seeds, buds and acorns.Their main breeding areas are concentrated in three regions in northern Mexico : Tutuaca Forest reserve,Chihuahua, Madera and Mesa de las Guacamayas. Medera, in the core of the species known breeding distribution , holds the large distribution of world’s remaining thick-billed parrot nests each year.
